Waterscan's rainwater harvesting solution reduces store water consumption by 31%
Tesco Energy Team and Waterscan have been working together for seven years to improve Tesco's water efficiency, achieve their sustainability targets and reduce their water charges. In 2006 Tesco announced its pledge to 'reduce water consumption per square metre by 5% within 3 years'.
Tesco consumes significant quantities of water and only a small proportion is subsequently used for direct potable use. It was decided that by using rainwater appropriately in conjunction with water efficient devices such as dual flush toilets, urinal controllers and percussion taps, Tesco could save up to 40% on store water bills.
Waterscan has undertaken a programme of designing and installing rainwater collection and distribution systems in both new developments and existing buildings, as an alternative water supply for vehicle washing and toilet and urinal flushing. The systems are delivered as a complete package with rainwater tanks, integrated rainwater controls and mains water back up.
Waterscan's rainwater harvesting solutions are specified by Tesco New Build Design Standards. To date Waterscan has installed 24 systems with a payback period of 3-4 years. As a result Tesco have harvested 182,000m3 of rainwater since 2006 saving them £372,000 of water company charges. Fourteen new installations are scheduled for completion by the end of 2009 and further water saving initiatives are planned for 2010 and beyond.
