Case study: Tesco

During a water conservation programme commissioned by Tesco Energy Team, Waterscan identified rainwater harvesting as an area where considerable reductions in water consumption could be made.

Tesco consumes significant quantities of water supplied by the local water company and only a small proportion is subsequently used for direct potable use. Using rainwater appropriately in conjunction with water efficient devices such as dual flush toilets and percussion taps, can save up to 40% on store water bills.

Rainwater project

Waterscan have undertaken a programme of installing rainwater collection and distribution systems in both new developments and existing buildings as an alternative water supply to be used for vehicle washing and toilet and urinal flushing.

To date we have installed 14 systems with a payback period of 3-4 years. As a result Tesco have harvested 28,000 m3 of rainwater since 2006.

Aqua-control technology

Aqua Control rainwater harvesting equipment supplied by Waterscan is specified by Tesco New Build Design Standards. It is a comprehensive rainwater management system with compact engineered packages with all main components housed in a single enclosure cabinet including integral break tank, pumps, filtration, instrumentation, ancillary equipment and control system. This enables Tesco to connect services throughout the store without additional water distribution systems.

The units are also listed on the Water Technology List which means that Tesco can claim 100% first year capital allowances. The result has been the efficient and cost effective implementation of rainwater harvesting that seamlessly integrates with the store operation.
